MENOPAUSAL SKIN
When menopause hits it can hit like a truck! This is the time in our lives when we can potentially be feeling our worst, but it doesn’t mean we can’t still look our best. I feel like I’m on a personal crusade, along with my colleagues at Face Aesthetic Clinic, to help ladies realise and see their full skin potential. As you may know, when we hit our 40’s (earlier for some ladies), our skin starts to change.
This is due to the declining levels of oestrogen and collagen, as well as other factors including diet and free radicals. Studies have shown that oestrogen plays a role in collagen production, skin’s elasticity, thickness, and moisture levels, as well as healthy blood vessels. When you produce less oestrogen, you may see the opposite: lines and wrinkles, dryness, sensitivity, dullness, and sagging. Scarily, we lose 1% of collagen per year pre-menopause. During the first five years of menopause, we lose 30%, and a further 2% per year post-menopause. With this loss of collagen, our skin starts to sag around our neck, jawline, and cheeks. We also start to notice the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as our skin becomes drier. The hormonal changes in our body can lead to break outs, dark spots, and more pigmentation.
It’s not all doom and gloom though, ladies! There are products and treatments that are available to help us look and feel our best selves as we go through perimenopause, and menopause. The best in clinic treatments are; HIFU, Radio Frequency Needling, BBL and Laser.
HIFU treats deep down into the muscular layer of the skin to tighten under our collagen to support the skin long term. Radio Frequency needling works to stimulate collagen and tighten the skins outer tissue both targeting sagging and laxity.
BBL and Laser work to clean up pigmentation, broken capillaries and texture on the surface of the skin.
At Face we offer in-depth skin consultations to understand your concerns, goals and expectations. We personalise all our courses to suit your individual needs and work with you for the best results.
Menopausal Skincare Tips- If you have dry skin, look for skincare with hyaluronic acid and ceramides. At Face we always recommend SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Repair, as it repairs the ceramides, fatty acids and cholesterol lost during menopause . Lack of firmness? Go for retinol or retinal, our super star product is the Crystal Retinals from Medik8 (always get a professional consultation before purchasing retinal). And if fine lines are creeping in, go for peptide skincare. Peptides are amino acids that can help boost dull and dehydrated skin. Both ceramides and peptides are a gentle way to keep your skin barrier in check without being super aggressive. Salicylic acid skincare is the answer if you’re experiencing menopausal breakouts, while dull skin can be tackled with an exfoliating acid toner. Vitamin C serum is super important and taking an oral vitamin C supplement (500 mg twice a day). The antioxidant vitamin is essential for collagen production.
