UNDERSTANDING – ROSACEA
Rosacea is a long-term inflammatory skin disorder and it affects both men and women. Although men tend to get more aggressive symptoms, it is more commonly seen in women. It is thought that as many as one in 10 women between the ages of 30 and 55 struggle with symptoms of rosacea.
Symptoms include the typical ‘flushing’ and the more obvious swollen capillaries and fluid filled spots that can often resemble acne. We have recently seen a rise in clients seeking clinic-based treatments for rosacea as people are now less likely to accept skin disorders, particularly those that have an effect on their confidence and self-esteem. There has been a great improvement in treatments for rosacea over the years – as we move away from traditional treatment methods, that were quite drug focused, we now move towards a multi-dimensional approach, so there is no longer a need for rosacea patients to endure their symptoms or even allow them to escalate.
Rosacea is primarily hereditary, it is triggered by hormones, diet and lifestyle. Frustratingly, the real cause of rosacea is unknown. What we do know is that it’s a disease not only of the blood vessels, but also of the skin’s structure. There is no one cause, which leaves us with an incredibly frustrating skin disorder that we aim to improve and control, rather than cure. Finding the trigger for your rosacea outbreaks is key to controlling it. Some of the most common stimulants are: excessive sun exposure, stress, extreme change in temperatures, hot and spicy foods, dairy, alcohol and medication. When we treat a rosacea client, we initially work on a process of elimination and keeping a food diary is always a good tool to use.
At FACE we use a multi-dimensional approach to rosacea, which is getting us really great results . We do a thorough consultation whereby we build a treatment plan based on potential triggers and add in client specific supplements and skincare. We have spent years researching and trialling the best products and are getting super results. We also combine two light-based laser treatments to manage redness and breakouts that are common with rosacea. It is a journey for the client and maintenance is essential to keeping on top of this inflammatory skin disorder. There is no “one size fix for all” approach; each patient will be assessed individually and provided with a treatment plan and regular reviews. With careful treatment planning, significant improvements can be achieved.
